Days 5-7
Welcome back. So here is what happened in days 5-7…
Drinking. Lots of drinking. We are not go go go tourists. We did some of that the first few days, but don’t want to do that all the time.
On day 5 there was drinking and then about 6:30pm we took a Dark History Tour. Learned a bit about some of the horrible things that were done here in Galway to gain/keep power. Killing your whole family so you can inherit everything, hanging your own son to prove a point, and so on and so forth. Interesting and terrible all at the same time. After the tour, yep you guessed it, more drinking.
Day 6 happened to be my birthday. I celebrated turning an unremarkable 47 by drinking all day for the most part. The morning started at 10:30am with a Guinness. Monroe’s Pub opens at 11am with Andy behind the bar. However you can get a head start if you know that the side door is open at 10:30. One of the benefits of not being on tours the whole time is learning the local cheat codes. This was one of them. Spending time at the bar chatting with locals and not being an obnoxious tourist does have its benefits.
Now my wife didn’t go drinking with me this early. She went down by the water and explored looking for critters in tide pools. She had no luck and we later found out that the water treatment plant that is out in the harbor on an island, basically eliminated all of that between It and Galway proper. Apparently the sucking in of all the water either pulled all the life out or at least the things life wants to consume. So for all of 3 hours on this trip I was alone in the bar.
At 2pm I went back to M.P. Walsh and drank some more. Up until about 4:30. Whiskey on whiskey. Went back to the Airbnb to change and get ready for dinner at Kai Restaurant. This is a Michelin recommended restaurant. The food was very good and the atmosphere wasn’t pretentious like you might think a high end restaurant would be. Our meal ran us about 125€ and we had plenty to eat.
If you want very high end and potentially snobby(I don’t know didn’t go in just guessing) try Anair in Galway. They have a Michelin Star and the tasting menu is 176€ a person. Not including drinks which at the lowest is another 60€. After dinner we went back to M.P. Walsh and I drank even more whiskey. Tried whiskeys I’d never had or heard of anywhere between 15€ a drink to 25€. I passed on the Redbreast 27 year sat 85€ for a pour. Even on my birthday I’m Not silly. Well after a while it was time to shut down day 6.
Day 7- MORE DRINKING. My wife and I walked while through the shops so she could find some trinkets to take back to folks. The. I dropped her at the tattoo parlor where she got a new tattoo to commemorate the trip. Pretty reasonable pricing at 150€. Worth it as I got a few hours to myself again to do, you guessed it, drink.

emember day 6? Just put that on repeat minus the nice dinner and substitute in a pizza. All in all a great day. Overall we had a great time in Galway. A lovely, vibrant, walkable city. We will miss it but it’s on to Dublin for Day 8 and the upcoming Farmageddon game.
